Sunday is gone

Following up on the previous post.

So, I got a call from the vet just after getting back from my walk with the dogs. She told me Sunday was struggling to breathe, and that I should come if I could. Chances were he wasn’t going to make it.

So I went.

The poor little thing was on the table being given oxygen, and they were trying to keep him warm as he had a low temperature.

Last night, the vet sent me a message that was pretty optimistic: Today, the veterinarian assessed Sunday and found that the front paws appear slightly more swollen than before. This may be related to a decrease in blood protein levels, which can cause fluid accumulation and swelling in the extremities. In addition, Sunday’s eye discharge has become greener today, suggesting a possible bacterial infection. Therefore, we will start antibiotic eye drops and artificial tears to help manage the eye condition. On a positive note, Sunday is eating well and remains bright and responsive. If he continues to eat well and shows no signs of lethargy tomorrow, we plan to discontinue the intravenous fluid line, switch to subcutaneous fluid administration, and move him to a regular hospitalization room. If the swelling becomes more pronounced this evening, particularly in the paws or other extremities, we may consider applying a compression bandage to help reduce the swelling.

His blood tests apparently showed some improvement this morning when they checked again. But his heart was beating very slowly. Then very fast. He had arrhythmia.

After a while, he was taken to the surgery room to be put on the oxygen machine, but after 40 minutes of no improvement, we gave up and stopped the machine. I spent the whole time crying and talking to him, hoping to convince him to stay, so he could get better and finally have a life worth living, but it didn’t work.

I apologised to him for the way humans had failed him. He must have been looking sick for a very long time before I took him to the hospital, and it really bugs me that no one thought about helping him before he got to the state he was in.

I didn’t want to go through a cremation ceremony like we did with Onyx and Cali. It’s also 3000 baht plus the urn, and as I still haven’t received any support, I didn’t want the extra expense. I asked the vet if she could organise for him to be buried, and she said she would.

His hospital stay and treatment were a lot shorter than I expected. And came up to 8446 baht. Which is almost £200.
